How Does an Alarm Safe Work? Wrong-Code and Vibration Alarms

Short answer: Alarm safes have two separate alarms: repeated wrong code entries and shaking / vibration / impact. After three wrong codes, most models sound an audible alarm and the panel locks for a while; when someone tries to move or hit the safe, the second alarm sounds. An alarm does not physically stop a thief; it deters and alerts those around you, which is why anchoring the safe to the wall or floor increases the alarm's effect. Below we have compiled, from the product pages, which model states which alarm behaviour.

1. Wrong-Code Alarm and Panel Lock

This is the most basic protection against trial-and-error attempts to get into a keypad safe. The common rule on the product pages is "3 consecutive wrong entries"; what happens afterwards varies by model:

  • CS60: an alarm sound above 70 dB after 3 consecutive wrong codes.
  • Schutz H-43 TA: an audible alarm after 3 consecutive wrong codes, and the keypad locks for 1 minute.
  • Schutz H43-HQ: locks the screen for 1 minute after 3 wrong entries.
  • MP 53W: a 5-minute security lock on a wrong code.
  • Schutz 45T: the alarm is triggered after consecutive wrong codes and the panel is temporarily locked.

2. Shock and Vibration Alarm

When someone tries to carry off, tip over or break open the safe, a sensor triggers the alarm. The product pages state this for the following models:

  • CS70 and CS60: an alarm on shaking and vibration; on the CS70, two separate alarms (wrong code + shaking) at a level of 70 decibels.
  • Schutz 60P, 80P, 100P: Alarm 1 for a wrong code, Alarm 2 for vibration/shaking.
  • Schutz 60-T, Shutz 50 T, 80-T: an alarm after 3 wrong codes or on shaking.
  • Gun Safe 1320F: a shock and impact alarm; also an audible or silent operating mode.

Does the Decibel Level Matter?

On the product pages, a numerical sound level is given only for the CS60 and CS70 (above 70 dB). For other models it says "high-decibel" or "audible and visual". When comparing, for models without a numerical value, rely on the alarm description on the product page and, if needed, on the technical information you can get from us; it would not be right to judge that one alarm is "better" from decibels alone, because the safe's location and ambient noise determine the result.

4 Habits That Make the Alarm Effective

  • Anchor the safe; an anchored safe cannot be taken away while the alarm sounds.
  • Change the code often and do not share it with anyone; tell your family / team that the panel may lock if someone else makes wrong entries.
  • Replace the battery on time; know the emergency opening method if the code is forgotten or the battery runs out.
  • Learn what the panel warnings mean: on the Schutz 17B, 17W and H-43 TA, the green, yellow and red LEDs separately indicate a correct code, a wrong code, a code change and a low battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an alarm safe work?
There are two triggers: repeated wrong code entries and shaking/vibration. When triggered, an audible alarm (audible and visual on some models) goes off; after a wrong code, the panel may also lock for a set time.

After how many wrong codes does the alarm sound?
The common rule on the product pages is 3 consecutive wrong entries (CS60, H-43 TA, H43-HQ, Schutz 60-T, 60P, 80P, 100P and others).

How long does the panel lock when the alarm sounds?
It varies by model: 1 minute on the H-43 TA and H43-HQ, and a 5-minute security lock on the MP 53W.

Can the alarm be made silent on a gun safe?
The Gun Safe 1320F is stated to have an audible or silent operating mode.

Is an alarm alone enough for security?
No. An alarm is a deterrent; body and door thickness, lock structure and anchoring to the wall/floor should be considered together.
